Vegecol-based surface treatments enhance and protect the environment and surroundings of cities and towns. Natural, esthetic and sustainable, it is the ideal solution to create decorative surfacing projects using sustainable development methods.

Esthetic and innovative, Vegecol-based mixes are made from plant-based binder and mineral aggregate with no petrochemical related products.

Vegecol’s plant-based binder is composed of entirely renewable, natural agricultural products not used in human or animal food production.

Vegecol is transparent, allowing mixtures to take on the natural colour of the aggregate used. It can be coloured with pigments or mixed with 2-3 different types of aggregates to match specific requirements.

The manufacturing temperature of Vegecol-based mixes is 40° C lower than that of conventional bituminous materials, representing a considerable energy saving and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Vegecol mixes are manufactured in conventional hot mixing plants that are specially equipped for adding and proportioning synthetic binders. Batch mixing plants are in principle the most suitable for manufacturing both natural colored or pigmented mixes. In this case, it is possible to use 5 or 25 kg bags which are directly poured in the mixer with some precautions indicated by Colas’ Technical Department.

The manufacturing process is similar to that of conventional mixes except for the fact that the manufacturing temperature is approximately 40°C lower, if it’s used in bulk. The usual precautions regarding cleaning that are required when transparent or pigmentable binders are used must be taken when manufacturing these mixes.

Tests to guarantee the quality of constituents will be conducted in compliance with the quality assurance plans of suppliers or their control plan in the event of certification.

When natural or coloured mixes, the usual precautions regarding the cleaning of equipment must be taken.

Laying is carried out with a conventional paver.

Compaction is carried out with a smooth steel roller, in accordance with best practice. The decision as to when to reopen the road to traffic is taken in consultation with the Colas Technical Department.

General characteristics

Vegecol is available in different viscosity classes depending on the envisaged use.

  • AES 7.1. Vegecol registers values above 29 (39 and 47 for caramel and white respectively) on the Solar Reflectance Index (SRI), keeping it in compliance with Option A of credit AES 7.1 on the reduction of heat island effect for objects other than roofs.
  • EA 1. A high SRI value corresponding to albedos (a measure of how strongly objects reflect light) 0.33 to 0.39 allows the intensity of exterior lighting to be reduced, contributing to a lower energy footprint that positively affects the calculation of credit EA 1 on energy consumption.
  • MR 4.1 or 4.2. If laid over bituminous paving with a high content of recycled material, Vegecol contributes to credits MR 4.1 or 4.2 on recycled content, MR 5.1 and 5.2 on regional materials.
  • MR 6. Vegecol is a plant-based binder and it falls under the highly renewable materials category for credit MR 6.
  • IPD 1. Vegecol is a new line of entirely plant-based, renewable binders—the first innovation in road surface binding (concrete, bitumen, resin, etc.) in decades. The World Road Association recognized this achievement in 2007, its centennial year, with the PIARC Award. The innovation may also be considered for the IPD 1 credit for innovation and design.
